Theresa May,
right in Birmingham today, will be summoned to Buckingham Palace on Wednesday
to be appointed as the successor to David Cameron, inset with Richard Branson
at the Farnborough Air Show today, after Andrea Leadsom, left, ended her
leadership bid. Mr Cameron emerged from No 10 this afternoon to confirm he
would hold his final Cabinet meeting tomorrow and complete a valedictory PMQs
on Wednesday before taking the short journey to Buckingham Palace to submit his
resignation to the Queen. The collapse of Mrs Leadsom's campaign, the launch of
which itself helped destroy Boris Johnson's political hopes a week after the
Brexit referendum, comes after a bitter weekend of infighting over her
suggestion being a mother would give her an edge over Mrs May in No 10. On
another extraordinary day in Westminster, the extraordinary moment Mrs Leadsom
abandoned her run at No 10 came less than a week after she won a surprise
second place in the ballot among Tory MPs. It capped an historic 17 days
following the EU referendum on June 23. Mrs Leadsom announced her bid to be
Prime Minister on June 30 - the same morning as Michael Gove knifed Mr Johnson
by launching his own doomed bid for the Tory crown.
